What the spectrum is showing you

A spectrum splits the signal into frequency bands and plots how much energy is in each one, moment by moment. Roughly 20–250 Hz is kick and bass, 250 Hz–4 kHz is where vocals and melody sit, and 4–16 kHz carries hats, cymbals and air.

Watching a mix as a spectrum is the reason these styles read as accurate rather than decorative — the shape on screen is a real measurement of the file, not an animation loosely timed to it.

The controls that actually change the look

Bar count sets resolution: fewer, wider bars read as punchy at a distance, while a high count starts to look like a continuous curve. Sensitivity scales how far quiet passages push, and contrast controls how hard loud peaks separate from the floor.

Peak caps — the small markers that hang above each bar and fall back down — are the detail that makes a bar visualizer feel responsive rather than flat.

Spectrum styles in the library

Questions

Is the spectrum computed in real time or ahead of time?

Ahead of time. The whole file is analysed in one pass before rendering starts, which is why recording can run faster than playback and why the motion never drifts out of sync.

Can I change how many bars are shown?

Yes. Bar count is adjustable, along with sensitivity, contrast and peak caps. Fewer bars read better on small screens; more bars look like a continuous curve.

What is a spectrogram?

A plot with time on one axis and frequency on the other, with brightness showing energy. It shows the shape of a whole arrangement at once rather than a single instant, which is why it suits longer renders.
